The Three R’s

Brian Henman Wilsonton Uniting Church

We remember from school days the importance of the so called three Rs. Reading, Righting, and Rithmatic. These three were seen as a necessity for basic education. I would suggest three Rs for a basic understanding of the Christian faith. The first R is for Repentance. Repentance is to turn from wrongdoing to a new life. A recognition of our missing the mark God has set for humanity. The second R is for Reconciliation and we could add Restoration. It is God’s intention that we live in harmony with God and our fellow humans.

All this is possible because of what Jesus, God’s Son, has done for all by his self-giving at Calvary. We add the letter R for Renewal. Our lives experience Renewal by the power of the Holy Spirit and grow in Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Humility and Self-control. And we might add three more with R for Rejoice for God’s continuing work in our lives. The Apostle Paul wrote; “ I now have the Righteousness that comes from God and is based on faith in Christ. All I want is to know Christ and to experience the power of his Resurrection, in the hope that I myself will be raised from death to life.” God’s Peace be yours.
