A young man asked Jesus “What good thing must I do to have eternal life”? This religious Jew thought by being good he will gain favour with God and obtain eternal life.This is the false notion of many. The only “good” thing we can do, to have eternal life is to believe and receive Jesus.

All the good we do, simply isn’t good enough. All have sinned and come short of the mark. Jesus did the only good thing to purchase our salvation. He gave His life: He died the just for the unjust, to bring us back to God. Jesus says “he who hears my word and believes on Him who sent Me has eternal life (now) and you shall not come into condemnation (you have been acquitted). You have passed from the realm of death and have been brought into the realm of life” John 5:24. Paul writes: By grace you have been saved (you have eternal life) through faith. And this faith is not from you, but is the gift of God, not your good works lest any should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
