The Master Preparing His People

Phil Doecke (PhD) (Toowoomba Christian Assembly)

After his resurrection, Jesus met his close followers on different occasions before returning to heaven.

Once, some went fishing in the Sea of Galilee – all night, without success. In the morning, they saw a lone figure on the beach. “Children, do you have any fish?” “No.” “Throw the net on the other side of the boat and you will find a catch.” It was a promise, not a suggestion. A promise that they’d find fish where he directed them. They did, and were unable to haul it in because of the great number of fish.

Now they recognised him. “It is the Lord!”

So many fish, yet the net wasn’t torn. They dragged it, full, to the shore. There Jesus had breakfast ready, with fish and bread grilling. He asked them to bring more fish that they’d just caught. Jesus was their Lord and master – he commanded them, yet he showed service, because when they obeyed, he provided both a miraculous catch and a prepared meal. They were his friends, for whom he’d already laid down his life. But now, arisen, he was preparing them for their great task of taking the Gospel out into the world.

Faithfully, they obeyed.
