Resolutions or Rest?

Pastor Andrew Nugteren - Christian Reformed Church in Glenvale

Let me guess. It’s that time of year when your New Year’s resolutions have already fallen by the wayside. Again. Eat better. Exercise more. Drop a bad habit. Develop a new skill. And now almost three weeks have passed. You’re back to where you started.

Jesus was born into a world of straining and striving, a world full of people trying sometimes ever so earnestly to do the right thing but always, inevitably, falling short. Coming up empty on their resolutions. Can there be more to life than this? Of trying and failing?

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

We won’t find rest in trying to live perfectly because we always come up short. Jesus lived that perfect life in our place, so that we can find rest in following him. Why not make following Jesus your resolution this year?
