Grace and Truth

John writes “the law was given by Moses, Grace and Truth came by Jesus Christ”. These two leaders: Moses the old covenant man and Jesus the new covenant man. John dismisses Moses and introduces Jesus. The Law of Moses could not save or give life. It was never meant to give life. The purpose of the law was to expose our desperate need of grace.

The law is not of faith, but a legal system of do’s and don’ts. It proves all guilty before God. Grace and truth have always been, yet veiled somewhat within the Mosaic system. Grace and truth is fully revealed in the person and redemptive work of Jesus.

The words of the fiery law are hushed forever. We have a new word, a new covenant, better promises, new commands with a new hope and a greater glory. The sinless Saviour fulfilled all the requirements of the law and nailed it to the Cross.

Every believer should now desire to know the grace of God in truth and grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
