God can be scary on purpose – “Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the Lord descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently. As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him” (Exodus 19-18-19).
The idea was not for people to become scared of God but fear him nevertheless – “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning” (Exodus 20:20).
The better we know God, the more we become aware of his holiness and might, and the more pressing is the need to have healthy respect before God. He is God, and we are not.
But we can be bold, because “the blood of Jesus (shed for our sins) gives us boldness to enter the most holy place with God” (Hebrews 10:19).
People draw near God because he is good and loving, but you are also wise to fear God in a healthy way.
